What is the best filler for the lips?

The most common question we get is “what is the best filler for the lips?“. There is no answer to this, I’ll just advise you as to what not to use.

So, anything that’s not an HA filler, meaning a hyaluronic acid, I would advise against unless you have a very specific reason for using it.

The best-known hyaluronic acid (HA) filler being Juvederm and Restylane. Juvederm Vycross series (Volift, Volbella & Voluma) are my favourite filler to use.

These last up to 18 months before the body breaks them down. Exactly how long they last depends on how much was injected and the metabolism of the patient — some people’s bodies appear to break down fillers much faster.

HA filler is the safest and if you ever change your mind, it can be dissolved and return back to your original lips.

The Big “X” or the definitely do not

If you are offered permanent fillers, say ‘no’. You don’t want anything injected into your face that will stay for good.

Permanent fillers might appear a great idea — no need to go back each year for a top-up! So much cheaper! But the potential problems are huge. With anything that is injected into your face, there is always a risk the body will, at some point, decide it doesn’t like this foreign material and ‘encapsulate’ it, growing collagen around it in a hard lump to shut it off from the rest of your skin tissue. If that happens, the only way to remove the growth and the original filler is to have it surgically removed.

Encapsulation isn’t the only problem. As your face changes over the years, and some parts of it sag and descend, the blob of permanent filler may no longer be exactly where you want it to be. So avoid permanent fillers — particularly in your lips.

Injections are not 100% predictable

Nobody can do a 100% predictable injection and so when you do a filler, you wanna make sure that if something goes wrong it can be fixed. So you stay away from permanent filler like silicone, stay away from Artefill,, Bellafill, anything that is semi temporary, you don’t know what it is.

How about fat injection on the lips?

You can do fat injection on the lips, but I’d be very cautious and do very very small amounts . Fat injections can caused the same exact problems silicone can. It can migrate, it can hypertrophy, it can thicken, it can cause nodules, and it is very difficult to fix.

So what filler do you use?

The filler that I use the most is Juvederm Volift for the lips but some products are better suited for certain injection technique to achieve certain look.
